Sandestin Golf Cart FAQs

No, the golf cart you purchase for your Sandestin home is not required to be street legal.

However, if your golf cart isn’t street legal, you will not be allowed to cross Highway 98 at the Sandestin Blvd and Highway 98 intersection. In contrast, if you own a street-legal golf cart, you can cross the aforementioned intersection to move between different sections of Sandestin.

For non-street legal golf carts, Sandestin provides golf cart tunnels that run beneath Highway 98, enabling you to travel from one side of Sandestin to the other safely.

Charging an electric golf cart is quite different from charging an electric car. There is no need for a specialized charger to be installed in your home. All you require is the charging cable included with your golf cart, a standard 110-watt wall outlet, and, in most cases, an extension cord to reach the outlet.

If you own a home in Sandestin, it likely has an outlet either in the garage or on the side of the house. Simply plug the charger provided with your golf cart purchase into the nearest outlet. If it can’t reach, we recommend purchasing a 14-16 gauge extension cord that is at least 25 feet long. In our rental business, all our golf carts come with the charging cable and a 50-foot extension cord.

When it’s time to charge your golf cart, ensure that you plug it into an outlet without any other devices connected, especially if you own a lithium electric golf cart. This helps prevent circuit breakers from tripping and ensures there is sufficient wattage available in the outlet to fully charge your golf cart.

The SOA mandates that golf cart owners renew their registration with the community every two years. During the renewal process, the SOA reserves the right to reinspect any carts to verify their compliance with the Sandestin Golf Cart guidelines. The SOA has the authority to deny registration renewal for any cart deemed not to meet the required specifications.

Sandestin’s golf cart policy states that “while operating on the property, drivers must be at least 16 years of age and have in their possession a valid automobile operating license.” However, this is merely a general guideline. If you purchase a golf cart in Sandestin strictly for personal use, a 16-year-old with a valid driver’s license is likely allowed to operate it within the community. On the other hand, if you buy a golf cart intending to rent it out to vacationers staying at your rental property, different insurance requirements apply.

For instance, in our street-legal golf cart rental business, our insurance company requires that we only permit drivers aged 21 or older to operate our street-legal golf carts. Therefore, if you purchase a golf cart in Sandestin with the intention of allowing renters to drive it, your insurance company may require drivers to be at least 18 years of age or older. In some cases, they may require drivers to be 21 or older, or even 25 or older, similar to car rental policies.
